IN THIS SOUND DESIGN WORKSHOP, PARTICIPANTS WILL EXPLORE EXPERIMENTAL APPROACHES TO CREATING ELECTRONIC MUSIC THROUGH THE PHILOSOPHICAL LENS OF GILLES DELEUZE AND FÉLIX GUATTARI’S CONCEPTS OF RHIZOMATIC AND ARBORESCENT THINKING. BEGINNING WITH A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THESE IDEAS, PARTICIPANTS WILL EXAMINE WHAT IT MEANS TO “CREATE THE NEW” IN SOUND SYNTHESIS AND MUSICAL COMPOSITION.
THROUGH LISTENING TO SELECTED EXAMPLES OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC THAT INCORPORATE EITHER HIERARCHICAL (ARBORESCENT) OR NON-LINEAR (RHIZOMATIC) APPROACHES, AND BY TRACING THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF ELECTRONIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, THE WORKSHOP WILL HIGHLIGHT HOW THESE PHILOSOPHICAL FRAMEWORKS HAVE INFLUENCED THEIR DESIGN. THE WORKSHOP WILL THEN FOCUS ON THE RHIZOMATIC PRACTICE OF MODULAR SYNTHESIS, WHILE ALSO EXAMINING HOW LAPTOP ENSEMBLES ADOPT DECENTRALISED AND GENERATIVE FORMS OF MUSICAL PERFORMANCE.
PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIMENT HANDS-ON WITH AUTOMATONISM, A FREE-SOFTWARE MODULAR SYNTHESIS ENVIRONMENT THAT ENABLES OPEN AND FLUID SONIC CREATION. THE WORKSHOP CULMINATES IN A COLLECTIVE, IMPROVISED COMPOSITION FORMED THROUGH AN EMERGENT SONIC ECOSYSTEM CREATED ON THE SPOT BY ALL PARTICIPANTS.
EACH PARTICIPANT IS REQUIRED TO BRING A LAPTOP AND A PAIR OF HEADPHONES.
